The White House has warned that China may respond to United States House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi’s expected visit to Taiwan with military provocations.
Spokesman, John Kirby said this could include firing missiles near Taiwan, or large-scale air or naval activities.
Reports says Mrs. Pelosi touched down in Malaysia on Tuesday on her tour of Asia.
Taiwanese and US media says she plans to visit Taipei on Tuesday night, but there has been no official confirmation.
Taiwan is a self-ruled island, but claimed by China, which sees it as a breakaway province. Beijing has warned of serious consequences if Mrs. Pelosi visits.
Andy Murray’s preparation for this month’s US Open began with a first-round defeat at the Washington Open.
The 35-year-old lost 7-6 (10-8) 4-6 6-1 to Sweden’s 115th-ranked Mikael Ymer.
Of his chances of being seeded for the US Open, the former world number one and current number 50 said: “It’s still possible, but I’ll need to certainly play better than I did.”
There were wins for Kyle Edmund and Jack Draper, but Katie Boulter was defeated in the Silicon Valley Classic.
Boulter shocked eight seed Karolina Pliskova by storming to the first set, only for the Czech to come through 1-6 7-6 6-3.
