WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY: Expert calls for more attention to health issue

World Hypertension Day, which is observed on May 17 yearly with focuses on creating awareness about Hypertension and its symptoms. Hypertension or high blood pressure occurs when the blood pressure rises to an unhealthy level of 140/90 and it is considered to have touched a dangerous level when the blood pressure measurement goes over 180/120.
According to report, over a billion people around the globe live with hypertension which is a major cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide. While hypertension was usually seen as a health condition found in older people, it has now become quite common in the younger population.
A Consultant at the International Cardiology Minipal Hospital, Dr. Mohan Kumar, established that this year’s World Hypertension Day is themed; “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer” is to withstand low awareness rates globally, engage activities designed to raise awareness of Blood Pressure Control.
Dr. Mohan also advised people with high blood pressure to adhere to prescriptions by their doctor as doing otherwise would be detrimental to their health.
The day focuses on creating effective communication about the importance of raising awareness on the early diagnosis of high blood pressure and avoiding complications of advanced stage complications.
