A Kaduna based pediatrician, Dr. Ahab Yakubu has called on all to make welcome and comfortable those with the Down syndrome in respect to the theme of this year’s Down syndrome day tagged “inclusion means”.
Dr. Ahab said Down syndrome is a hereditary condition that causes mild or serious physical and developmental problems and cleared out some misconceptions from parents and the society, stating statistically that one in a thousand children suffers from it. He made this known while speaking to Invicta FM’s news Correspondent, David Vincent Ejeh.
He further highlighted some of the symptoms that characterize children with Down syndrome which ranges from mild to moderate and rarely associated with severe cognitive impairment.
The pediatrician mentioned some physical and developmental therapy for people with Down syndrome and advised parents with such children to seek counsel from a genetic counselor.
With good care and adequate management, people with Down syndrome are useful and this year’s Down syndrome Day is vouching for inclusion means in all cedars of the society so they can contribute their quota to their society.
