The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the electoral act amendment bill into law.

In a statement on Friday by its spokesman, Senator John James Akpanudodehe, the ruling party said the assent is a big win for electioneering processes and democracy.

According to the APC, the signing is a development that provides an improved legal framework in the lead-up to the 2023 electioneering processes and all coming elections.

The APC noted with appreciation the patriotic efforts of the National Assembly, civil societies, development partners, and Nigerians whose collective efforts and support birthed the new Electoral Act.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) needs to roll out its guidelines for 2023 general elections following the signing of the Electoral Amendment Bill into law.

Abubakar made the call in his verified Twitter handle in reaction to the signing of the Bill into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Friday.

He said that INEC needed to do so in earnest so that the political parties and Nigerians could fully commence the journey to choose their leaders in 2023.

The former Vice President commended all stakeholders, including the National Assembly, that made the bill a reality.

President Buhari had earlier on Friday signed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2022 into law at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari, however, highlighted the need to amend section 84(12), which contravenes the rights of political office holders to vote, or be voted for in political party conventions and congresses.

—-Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike says that request by President Muhammadu Buhari to amend Section 84 (12) selfish move.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has said that the request by President Muhammadu Buhari to amend Section 84 (12) of the newly assented Electoral Act is a selfish move aimed at protecting sacred cows within his cabinet.

Wike, who reacted with mixed feelings to the signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law on Friday, said although the introduction of electronic transmission of results will reduce killings and electoral fraud in the country, the president’s reservations on Section 84(12), which deals with the status of political appointees during party conventions and congresses, is selfish.

Briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said Buhari’s reservation indicates that protecting the interest of his appointees was all the while the main reason for not signing the amended bill and not the initial rejection on the ground of the mode of conducting party primaries.

The Rivers State Governor called on the National Assembly not to be taken as ‘kindergartens’ by refusing to amend the section of the newly signed Electoral Act as requested by President Buhari. He equally challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to seize this opportunity to prove its credibility in delivering acceptable elections.

President Buhari had faulted Section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act, 2022. He believes the section disenfranchises serving political office holders from voting or being voted for at conventions or congresses of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election in cases where it holds earlier than 30 days to the national election.
