Twitter’s Public Policy team says the microblogging site is happy with the decision of the Nigerian Government to restore its operation in the country.
Twitter, which expressed its gratitude in a tweet said that its mission in Nigeria and around the world is to serve the public conversation.
The Federal Government had, in a statement, lifted the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria, which had been in effect since June 2021, effective from 12:00am on Thursday, 13th January 2022.
The United States, European Union, and Canada were among those who joined rights groups in condemning the ban as damaging to freedom of expression in Africa’s most populous country.
It would be recalled that Twitter had a major role in political discourse in Nigeria, with the hashtags #BringBackOurGirls after Boko Haram kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls in 2014, and #EndSARS during anti-police brutality protests in 2020.
