At least 37 people died when an overcrowded night ferry caught fire in Bangladesh on Friday.

Bangladeshi police, which disclosed this, said that some terrified passengers jumped overboard to escape the blaze.

The latest disaster to hit the poor nation happened in the early hours in a river near Jhalokathi, 250 kilometres south of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.

Local police chief, Moinul Islam, who told newsmen that the 37 bodies, which were recovered had either died from the fire or drowned in the river, added that the death toll from the incident may rise.
