The National Blood Transfusion Service, NBTS, has called for total abstinence from premarital sexual activity.
The Head of recruitment, Kaduna Zonal office of the National Transfusion Service, Mrs. Clara Mara, made the call during a seminar organized by the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria, CAMPAN, Kaduna chapter on war against drug abuse.
The NBTS Head of recruitment explained that one of the fastest contributory factors to shortage of safe blood is high intake of drug and drug abuse amongst the youths who engage in unprotected sex while under the influence of drug or alcohol.
She maintained that one of the reasons for shortage of safe blood in the Country is due to poor infrastructure deficit, adding that some hospitals engage in blood transfusion without following the right guidelines thereby, subjecting recipients to the risk of having unsafe blood.
Mrs. Mara dwelt on the importance of blood donation, which according to her, saves people from the risk of heart attack by 88 per cent, especially for men who have excess ion, reduces the chances of having stroke by 30 per cent as well as saving the lives of accidents victims.
