Nigerians Celebrate Global Day of Parents, calls for more appreciation

The 1st of June is celebrated as the Global Day of Parents to honour and appreciate parents around the world for their selfless commitment to children and their countless sacrifices.

In its resolution 47/237 of 1993, the United Nations’ General Assembly decided that May 15 will be observed as the International Day of Families and further realised that parents play an important role in families and hence in 2012, the General Assembly dedicated Global Day of Parents to appreciate all parents.

The theme for the year “Appreciate all parents throughout the world.” is an expression of gratitude, especially with the coronavirus pandemic which has increased the responsibilities of parents around the world in the provision of financial, mental, emotional, and basic support to their children.

Speaking to a cross section of Nigerians, they expressed themselves on what been their parents means to them.

The Day provides an opportunity for people with parents, would be ones and those who have lost either or both to imbibe the culture of appreciation for their Parents selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship.

Respondents called on the relevant authorities to ensure the total well being of parents are adequately taken care off, so they in turn take care of their biological and adopted children.
