Elder statesman and former Presidential Liaison Adviser in the Second Republic, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has called for the abolition of Local Government tier, and the creation of six Regional Government with their legislature to go along side with States and Federal Government.
Yakasai who made this submission at Northwest zonal Senate Public Hearing on the amendment of the 1999 Constitution, also kicked against the creation of State Police, saying the experience of Native Authority in the First Republic is a bitter lesson that stands against State Police.
Also, a leading member of the Middle Belt Forum, Barrister Mark Jacob charged the 9th National Assembly to make history, by ensuring that this round of constitution amendment come into effect, to avoid towing the part of previous Assembly’s constitution amendment ritual that could not yield expected outcome.
On his part, the Northwest Zonal Chairman of Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Kabir Gaiya who expressed satisfaction with the turn out, said hearing received 77 Memorandum on different issues.
Invicta FM Correspondent, Ango Bally who covered the two-day hearings, reports that some of the submissions also included calls for a Unicameral legislature, upgrade of minimum qualification for election from School Cert to Diploma Certificate or its equivalent; electronic voting and also to allow Nigerians in diaspora to vote in elections.
